    Language Identification Using Visual Features

    Automatic visual language identification (VLID) is the technology of using information derived from the visual appearance and movement of the speech articulators to iden- tify the language being spoken, without the use of any audio information. This technique for language identification (LID) is useful in situations in which conventional audio processing is ineffective (very noisy environments), or impossible (no audio signal is available). Research in this field is also beneficial in the related field of automatic lip-reading. This paper introduces several methods for visual language identification (VLID). They are based upon audio LID techniques, which exploit language phonology and phonotactics to discriminate languages. We show that VLID is possible in a speaker-dependent mode by discrimi- nating different languages spoken by an individual, and we then extend the technique to speaker-independent operation, taking pains to ensure that discrimination is not due to artefacts, either visual (e.g. skin-tone) or audio (e.g. rate of speaking). Although the low accuracy of visual speech recognition currently limits the performance of VLID, we can obtain an error-rate of < 10% in discriminating between Arabic and English on 19 speakers and using about 30s of visual speech

    Towards the tumble resistant microlight

    The tumble mode is a pitching departure from controlled flight which leads to a pitch autorotation that is generally unrecoverable – resulting in vertical ground impact, usually preceded by in-flight breakup (the mechanism for which, surprisingly, can sometimes prevent loss of life). This was identified in work led by the British Microlight Aircraft Association beginning in 1997 as a response to a number of fatal accidents in Rogallo winged microlight aeroplanes, although the tumble is also known to occur to hang-gliders. This paper explains how this class of aeroplane is controlled, and how it has been found that they can enter the tumble mode. The mechanism by which the tumble can be entered is described. This has led to work showing how flight testing can be used to establish and demonstrate resistance to tumble entry – particularly important with increasing number of very high performance flexwings. These flight tests will be explained, together with the significance of the results. Recent accident investigation work has also shown a new mechanism of tumble entry, through partial failure of the A-frame structure and the pitch-trimmer mechanism. Also described is a possible relevance to well known historical accidents to flying wing aeroplanes – specifically the YB-49 and dH-108, and discovered data on the characteristics of the BKB-1 flying wing glider; are also described

    We study community structure of networks. We have developed a scheme for maximizing the modularity Q based on mean field methods. Further, we have defined a simple family of random networks with community structure; we understand the behavior of these networks analytically.     A ``persistence'' exponent theta has been extensively used to describe the nonequilibrium dynamics of spin systems following a deep quench: for zero-temperature homogeneous Ising models on the d-dimensional cubic lattice, the fraction p(t) of spins not flipped by time t decays to zero like t^[-theta(d)] for low d; for high d, p(t) may decay to p(infinity)>0, because of ``blocking'' (but perhaps still like a power). What are the effects of disorder or changes of lattice? We show that these can quite generally lead to blocking (and convergence to a metastable configuration) even for low d, and then present two examples --- one disordered and one homogeneous --- where p(t) decays exponentially to p(infinity).Comment: 8 pages (LaTeX); to appear in Physical Review Letter

    Efforts to further verify a previously reported technique for predicting monthly sunspot numbers over a period of years (1979 to 1989) involved the application of the technique over the period for the maximum epoch of solar cycle 19. Results obtained are presented.     Uniqueness of Ground States for Short-Range Spin Glasses in the Half-Plane

    We consider the Edwards-Anderson Ising spin glass model on the half-plane Z×Z+Z \times Z^+ with zero external field and a wide range of choices, including mean zero Gaussian, for the common distribution of the collection J of i.i.d. nearest neighbor couplings. The infinite-volume joint distribution K(J,α)K(J,\alpha) of couplings J and ground state pairs α\alpha with periodic (respectively, free) boundary conditions in the horizontal (respectively, vertical) coordinate is shown to exist without need for subsequence limits. Our main result is that for almost every J, the conditional distribution K(αJ)K(\alpha|J) is supported on a single ground state pair.Comment: 20 pages, 3 figure
